Outdoor exhibits are used to educate and entertain visitors much like our gallery exhibitions (see our Educational Programming.) The trading post hosts two encampments each year, and students can attend class in the one-room schoolhouse. The 1902 Elgin Depot, moved to the Museum's grounds in 1963, sits beside a Frisco steam locomotive. An agricultural shed runs the full length of the compound's northern boundary, where various kinds of farm equipment are displayed. Visitors can watch prairie dogs and learn about their unique social habits. Situated in the middle of the grounds is a round amphitheater, available for powwows and concerts.
