White Settlement, 1889 -1906

The first Land Run took place north of Gutherie.  This was on April 22, 1889.  Only one day later, towns had sprung up all along the Santa Fe Railway line. Large numbers of white settlers came to live here.

The 1889 Land Run (Opening of the Unassigned Lands)

The U.S. knew this part of the country would need a good system of government so that people would be protected and served. The new towns would need streets and fire stations.  They would need schools and marshals.  The Organic Act was passed on May 2, 1890.  Passing this act was the first step in setting up the Oklahoma Territory.
