More about the Land Districts
Binger Herman was an important man.
He was Richard's boss. Herman was a Commissioner. He was in charge
of the General Land Office.
On July 4, 1901, he put out a notice. Herman
told people about two new land districts. The districts were called
El Reno and Lawton. |
The El Reno district was a large district.
It included:
-
the Wichita
Reservation;
-
part of the Kiowa, Comanche, Apache (KCA)
Reservation north of the north border of Comanche County;
-
parts of the territory taken from the Oklahoma
land districts; and
-
the Kingfisher
land district.
|
The Lawton district was large. It
included some of the reservation that once belonged to the three native
tribes. All of the land south of the north border of Comanche County
was part of this district.
|
At first, the Land Office for Lawton was
located at Fort Sill. It was set up in tents.
William
Miller Jenkins was the Secretary of the Indian Territory. He
was picked to be the new governor. He started his new job on April 15,
1901. He was sworn into office on May 12th. The ceremony took place in
Gutherie. |
