Indian Territory, 1855-1866

Huge changes stunned the peoples in two native tribes. In 1855 and 1856, the lives of these people changed for all time.  The changes came from new treaties.  The Chickasaws and the Seminoles signed new contracts with the U.S.  More of the land that belonged to the tribes was leased to the government.  The tribes were moved further west.

The Chickasaws kept the middle part of the old Choctaw- Chickasaw district.  They leased the lands west of the 98th meridian.  Ranchers wanted the right to graze cattle there.  The tribes who were already living there were allowed to stay. Learn more about what happened!!
