Getting Ready to Auction the Town Sites

Waiting for the Opening

By August 3, I0, 000 people were waiting.  None of them were allowed to camp on the town site.  They had to wait outside of town.  Only the county and Land Office officials could come into town.

Over 400 businesses set up in tents.  They got ready to sell things to the settlers.  Some men made little buildings on wheels.  After they bought lots, they rolled their buildings onto the town site.

Only one small wooden building stood on the Lawton town site.  It was moved from Ft. Sill and served as the Land Office. The Land Office was on the corner of 3rd Street and D Avenue.
