The Five Civilized Tribes:
The Trail of Tears
Most natives who lived in the Southeast
were members of five tribes--the Cherokee,
the Creek,
the Choctaw, the Seminole,
and the Chickasaw.
These five tribes were called the Five Civilized Tribes because they had
learned the ways of the white man and chosen to live like white men.
Over the next 20 years, all five of these tribes were moved West. |

Settlers
moved onto their homelands. The removal took a long time. The road
was called the Trail
of Tears. The last of the native people to move were the Seminoles.
They fought the U.S. for years. But finally they were forced to move
from Florida to Oklahoma
in the 1840s.
Treaties were put in place for each of
the five tribes. Each of the tribes had its own constitution.
