The first version of the Jerome Agreement
was sent to the House. It passed in March 1900. The act said
that each native would get 160 acres of land.
But the law did not promise to pay the
natives for the rest of their land. So the Indian Rights Association
tried to sway people to vote against the bill. This pressure led
to another version of the act.
On July 6th, Congress passed the new version
of the Jerome Agreement. This time, the act stated terms all people
could live with.
Every native man, woman and child would
get 160 acres of land.
Sections 16 and 36 in every township would
be set aside. These two sections would be used for schools.
